"Our food should be our medicine and our
medicine should be our food."
-Hippocrates
The most important aspect of health is proper nutrition which starts pre-conception with parents. The average American is exposed to not only environmental toxins, but food-related toxins taken in through the "Standard American Diet" (SAD), which is loaded with non-nutritious, chemically-laden and processed foods that do not promote good health and severely challenge our immune systems. It is critical, now more than ever, that children are raised with a foundation of good nutrition, which will promote a lifetime of good health. Dr. Dumovic recommends whole food supplements and herbs, through which a nutritional gap in the "Standard American Diet" (SAD) is filled, exercise, (aerobic 3 times weekly for 30 minutes, as well as weight bearing exercises), rest and stress reduction; all of these elements are critical to good health. It is important for children to get lots of fresh air and exercise.
Dietary Dos...
- Drink plenty of pure water (3-4 glasses children, 6-8 adults)
- Eat lots of fresh vegetables and fruit, raw or lightly steamed
- Always start the day with a good breakfast
- Organic whenever possible
- Whole grains as much as possible
- Read labels: if you don't know what it is or can't pronounce it, don't eat it
- Avoid fried foods as much as possible (french fries, etc.)
- Avoid things in a bag (chips, etc. These cause the body to crave food low in nutrients and build body fats, leading to diabetes and cardiovascular disease)
...And Don'ts
- Drink soda (pop), coffee and alcohol
- Foods with high fructose corn syrup
- Foods with hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated fats
- Too much sugar (it kills white blood cells)
- Refined grains
- Foods with artificial colors, flavors and sweeteners (causes hyperactivity in children)
- Margarine
- Refined soy products
- Pasteurized milk products (the heating process destroys beneficial bacteria and enzymes which results in the body's inability to utilize the calcium and protein)
- Canola oil
- Fast food restaurants (these are highly processed foods low in nutrients high in fats, carbohydrates, sugars and toxins)
- Pork and processed meats
